The First Month of Cory’s A24 Binge-athon!

This post contains the first 25 installments of daily reviews on the films of American independent entertainment company A24, chronicling the journey from start to finish. The second month begins here!

95 films, and counting.

If you want to watch them in order, as I do, start with DAY 1 at the top! If not, skip around on the handy “A24 Ranked” list (bottom of post), or look for the GOLD STAR movies ⭐️. Follow along at home yourself to find out who else makes the cut!

Enjoy! Happy watching ❤

Day 1: A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III

Wow, not starting off strong with this series – – –

– – – one of the worst-rated A24 movies, but the adventurous ones out there will not regret the watch.

Day 2: Ginger & Rosa

– – – The first A24 movie to garner critical acclaim… well, real critical acclaim…

Day 3: Spring Breakers

Experimental and masterful, or completely devoid of humanity? – – –

– – – oddly enough, a bit of both…

Day 4: The Bling Ring

Sofia Coppola’s subtly atypical filmography gains another solid entry – – –

– – – even if it’s mired with a few uninventive choices.

Day 5: The Spectacular Now

– – – It sometimes feels like another teen movie, but somehow ends up as the best A24 movie so far!

Day 6: Enemy

Denis Villeneuve is amazing (as if that even needed to be said) – – –

– – – but this one still leaves a lot to be desired…

Day 7: Under the Skin ⭐️

FIRST GOLD STAR MOVIE EVERYONE! – – –

– – – IT’S FINALLY HERE!

Day 8: Locke ⭐️

– – – TWO GOLD STAR MOVIES IN A ROW! WOW!

Day 9: Obvious Child

– – – The typical rom-com drawbacks don’t hold back a solid directorial debut and starring role…

Day 10: The Rover

Even if it’s not winning many originality points upon first glance – – –

– – – this David Michôd movie still holds its grip with each passing minute.

Day 11: Life After Beth

– – – This movie by The Little Hours director Jeff Baena has faults galore, but who doesn’t love Aubrey Plaza?

Day 12: Tusk

This movie by Clerks director Kevin Smith has laughs and terror, but – – –

– – – wait, didn’t I post this same thing yesterday?

Day 13: Laggies

Keira Knightley and Chloë Grace Moretz star in this actor-focused rom-com – – –

– – – that never tries to exceed past our expectations…

Day 14: Revenge of the Green Dragons

This movie has all the right pieces of a gritty thriller – – –

– – – too bad it’s filmed and scripted in such a painfully horrible fashion.

Day 15: The Captive

Ryan Reynolds! – – –

– – – though he is not the focus here, this highly under-performing film still has some value to it amidst the bleak coldness…

Day 16: A Most Violent Year ⭐️

J.C. Chandor’s third film represents another well-received yet underrated feature – – –

– – – and is very deserving of a GOLD STAR!!!

Day 17: Son of a Gun

This imperfect directorial debut is an enjoyable watch – – –

– – – thanks to the romantic lead/heroin addict/Jedi master himself, EWAN MCGREGOR!

Day 18: While We’re Young

– – – One of Noah Baumbach’s best movies, and it’s even better after five years of existence.

Day 19: Cut Bank

A messy and unimpressive movie – – –

– – – but its biggest crime is just being so goddamn boring.

Day 20: Ex Machina ⭐️

– – – Another GOLD STAR! And the best A24 movie to date!

Day 21: Slow West

Michael Fassbender as a Western anti-hero, amidst violence, darkness, and nihilistic cynicism – – –

– – – what more can you ask for in a movie?

Day 22: Barely Lethal

– – – A disastrous teen movie with no prospects of individuality…

Day 23: Amy ⭐️

The new best A24 film! You know what that means – – –

– – – Yet another… GOLD STAR!

Day 24: The End of the Tour ⭐️

GOLD STAR AGAIN! – – –

– – – This remembrance and celebration of David Foster Wallace holds up as a captivating character study, crafted with nuance and sympathy for him as a human being…

Day 25: Dark Places

This inferior thriller can be enjoyable thanks to Gillian Flynn’s novel – – –

– – – but the good story is blocked by the screenwriter/director’s poor execution and adaptation…
